Exploring Portrait Painting Through Master Copy: John Singer Sargent

In this workshop, you’ll explore the techniques, style, and nuances that made John Singer Sargent a master of portraiture. We’ll be studying the portrait painting of Jane Norton Grew, in a close-up. By carefully reproducing this iconic work, participants will gain hands-on experience in blending, value, and composition while deepening their appreciation for Sargent’s bold brushwork and elegant depiction of light and form.

The practice of creating master copies originated during the Renaissance as a foundational learning tool for aspiring artists, who would replicate the works of renowned masters to develop their technical skills and artistic understanding. This tradition was formalized in European art academies, such as the French Académie Royale, where students studied classical and Old Master works to master composition, anatomy, and light. By copying these masterpieces, artists not only honed their craft but also gained insight into the cultural and historical context of their time—a practice that remains vital for artistic growth and education today.

Key benefits of creating a master copy:

  • By copying the brushstrokes, color palette, and composition of a master, artists can hone their technical skills in areas like blending, value, and color.

  • Copying different artists allows artists to explore various styles and techniques, helping them identify which aspects resonate with their own artistic vision.

  • Successfully creating a faithful copy of a renowned artwork can boost an artist's confidence in their abilities and technical proficiency.

  • After completing a master copy, artists should use the gained knowledge to develop their own unique style and approach in their original artwork.
